If your dog spends the day outside in Muhlenberg County, you know the look: red clay to the elbows, burrs in the tail and a very proud expression. This is the routine that keeps the mud on the porch and out of the house.
Step 1: Rinse and rub on the porch
Hose off legs and belly with lukewarm water, then put on a pair of rubber grooming gloves. Working against the mud loosens dirt and dead hair at the same time, and most dogs treat it like a massage.
Step 2: Comb out the mats
Once the coat is towel-dry, use a two-sided dematting comb. Start with the wide teeth on any tangles behind the ears and under the legs, then finish with the fine side.
Step 3: Ears and eyes
Floppy ears trap water after a swim. Slip on a finger wipe and clean only what you can see. A gentle eye wipe takes care of tear stains on lighter coats.
Step 4: Nails once a month
- Trim a little at a time, just the tip.
- Use clippers with a safety stop so you don't go too short.
- Give a treat after every paw. It makes next month easier.
