Safety Stash · October 2026 · by the Grab the Product team
Western Kentucky winters swing from mild to bitter in a single week. Older farmhouses, with their tall ceilings and patched-up wiring, feel every swing. Here is the checklist we run through every October.
1. Test every alarm
Press the test button on each smoke alarm, and make sure there is a carbon monoxide alarm on every floor if you heat with wood, propane or gas. Write the date on the back with a marker so you know when batteries were last changed.
2. Look hard at the wiring
Older homes often run more on extension cords than anyone admits. Retire any cord that is warm to the touch or frayed. A plug-in electrical fire sensor can watch your whole home's wiring and warn your phone about arcing before it turns into a fire.
3. Heat the rooms you use
| Room | Easy fix |
|---|---|
| Back bedroom | A compact heater with tip-over protection, three feet from anything |
| Home office | A heated foot massager under the desk |
| Bedroom | Breathable cotton sheets plus a heavier blanket on top |
4. Plan the way out
Walk your family through two ways out of every bedroom. For second floors, keep a folding escape ladder near the window and practice once so everyone knows how it hooks on.
